Overview

Over the past year or two the way in which software is sold and used has undergone a revolutionary change. A growing number of individuals and organisations are using software applications on mobile devices such as smart phones, “feature phones” and tablets. Popular digital distribution platforms have collectively recorded billions of application downloads over the past few years. It is estimated that the global market for mobile applications will exceed $25 billion by 2015.

 The JCSE is partnering with Microsoft and Nokia to present a short training course on developing apps for mobile devices. In particular developing apps for Windows Phone will be covered. The training course will focus both on:

  • Introducing important concepts and principles that are common to all mobile development languages, platforms and devices. This will be presented as lectures by JCSE / Wits University staff;
  • The development from scratch by each delegate of a software app for Windows Phone ready to be published on a distribution platform. Microsoft’s experts will present these lectures.

Successful apps produced on the course will be published on the Windows Phone App Market. A prize has been donated by Nokia and will be awarded for the best application developed on the course.

The course will consist of 5 sessions. Each session takes place on a Tuesday evening from 6pm to 9pm. The venue for all sessions is at Microsoft’s offices in Bryanston.

Who should attend?

  • Experienced software developers. It is not, however, necessary to have any experience in development of applications for mobile devices.
  • You must be committed to attending all sessions (they will take place from 6pm-9pm on Tuesday evenings).
  • Experience in the use of C#, VB .NET, C++ or some other OO language is recommended but not essential.
